Xiao Guodong achieved his long-awaited first career ranking title by defeating Si Jiahui 10-7 in the final of the Wuhan Open. The 35-year-old displayed brilliance in the early stages of the contest, leading 6-3 after the first session, highlighted by impressive breaks of 129 and 73.
After winning three of the first four frames in the evening session, Xiao found himself on the brink of victory. However, some shaky moments allowed Si to capitalize and win three consecutive frames with breaks of 76, 131, and 83, narrowing Xiao’s lead to just two frames.
The crucial 17th frame was filled with tension as both players struggled with nerves. Xiao missed some straightforward shots while Si made an error in attempting a pot. The crowd could sense the drama unfolding and erupted into cheers when Xiao took the lead in the frame.
Si missed the red ball three times in a row, giving Xiao the opportunity to close out the match and claim his first career title after 17 years as a professional.
“For a player, winning a title is extremely important. I turned professional in 2007, and after 17 years of competing, I’ve finally won my first ranking title. No matter what, it’s all been worth it.”
